"Breathe in deeply to bring your mind home to your body"
Thich Nhat Hanh
We are born with a natural, open and relaxed breath. We breathe in and out around 22000 times a day. When we breathe in, oxygen nurtures and energises the body. When we breathe out, we get rid of toxins ( breathing takes care of removing 70% of toxins from the body ). When we breathe openly, our diaphragm goes up and down, massaging our organs ( helping proper digestion and bloodflow ) and heart. The movement of the spine, hips and the whole body that comes with natural breathing lubricates our muscles and bones, stimulates the lymphatic system and improves our immunity.
Most of the time we breathe unconsciously. Our body just does it, controlled by the autonomic nervous system.
But stress and trauma change our natural breathing pattern drastically. We know that stress is one of the biggest health problems of our time. By the age of 25 most people only use around 25 or 30 percent of their breathing capacity. This has a huge impact on our bodies, from hyperventilation to anxiety to a poor functioning of the immune system and many physical health problems.
Most of the time we breathe unconsciously, but the good news is that we can also breathe consciously and learn to open our breath again and thus, influence the nervous system.
